One of many postcards Emperor Akihito sent to my grandfather, Lolo Enchong.
The two of them were in the field of Marine Biology, and they shared a common interest in goby fish. They exchanged scientific papers on the goby, and became good friends.
Lolo Enchong was invited as a guest of the then Prince Akihito to the Imperial Palace in Tokyo, where he also met other experts on the field. After that visit, the Emperor Hirohito sent him around 50-70 koi fish which came straight from the Koi Pond in the Imperial palace.
Since then, Akihito would send a postcard every Christmas to Lolo like this one, which included photos and a personally signed postcard.
Reblogging because 1. This is cool. 2. Emperor Akihito is into Marine Bio - very relevant to my interests o/
My Lego display before I tore them apart for the Bioshock logo =D
